Five European Union countries are advancing plans to establish migrant return centres outside the bloc for people whose asylum applications have been rejected, with the first facility expected to begin operations in Africa in 2027.
According to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW), the countries are working on what they describe as “return hubs” for individuals who have been ordered to leave the EU.
Rwanda and Uganda have repeatedly been cited by diplomatic sources and European media as possible locations for the centres. However, neither country has officially been confirmed as a host.
The initiative is part of wider European efforts to strengthen the implementation of return decisions for rejected asylum seekers.
