Osun Cocoa Theft Suspect Dies in Police Cell as Officer Faces Interrogation
Taofeek was detained in Agbeye after community members allegedly caught him with cocoa seeds; police say preliminary findings point to suicide

Virgin Times News Questions are mounting in Agbeye, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, following the death of a man identified simply as Taofeek, who reportedly died while in police detention after being arrested over an alleged cocoa theft. Taofeek was reportedly apprehended by members of the community on Monday after he was allegedly found with cocoa seeds suspected to have been stolen. Following his arrest, the suspect was taken to the palace of the traditional ruler before he was subsequently handed over to the police at the Agbeye Police Post. He was questioned and detained at the police facility. However, within hours, the suspect was reportedly found hanging inside the cell. Police confirm death, begin investigation The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said the police officer responsible for the outpost has been questioned as part of efforts to establish exactly what happened. Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the deceased was arrested by members of the community over an allegation of stealing cocoa seeds before being handed over to the police. According to the police account, officers questioned Taofeek after he was brought to the station and subsequently placed him in detention. When the officer later went to check on him, he was reportedly found dead inside the cell. The police said their investigation so far points to suicide, but the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation. Community tension after sudden death The incident has reportedly generated tension within the community, particularly because residents said Taofeek was known in the area. A community source said cocoa theft had become a recurring concern in the area and described the circumstances of Taofeek's death as disturbing. The source also claimed that photographs of the deceased had circulated within the community. The police, however, said they were not aware of any confirmed report that Taofeek had been publicly humiliated or paraded before being taken to the police station. Officer's role being examined The decision to question the officer in charge of the police outpost forms part of the police response to the incident. Authorities are expected to examine the events between the suspect's arrival at the station and the discovery of his body, including the circumstances surrounding his detention and the condition in which he was being held. No arrest has been announced in connection with the death. Police also said the family of the deceased had been contacted and discussions were ongoing regarding arrangements for his remains. Cocoa theft remains a concern The incident has also drawn attention to the problem of agricultural produce theft in farming communities. Cocoa remains an important agricultural commodity in Osun and other parts of South-West Nigeria, and allegations of theft can create tension between farmers, residents and community security groups. However, the allegation against Taofeek had not been tested in court before his death. He should therefore be regarded as a suspect in the alleged cocoa theft, rather than as someone legally convicted of the offence. Investigation expected to clarify unanswered questions The death has left several questions that authorities will need to address as the investigation progresses. Among them is how the suspect was able to take his own life while in police custody and whether there were any circumstances surrounding his detention that require further scrutiny. For now, the Osun Police Command says its preliminary findings indicate suicide, while the investigation continues. The deceased's remains have yet to be claimed by his relatives, according to the police. Virgin Times News will continue to monitor the investigation and report verified developments as they emerge.
