Drama in Bayelsa Court: 50-Year-Old Murder Suspect Collapses, Dies During Trial
Bethlehem Nwanlia reportedly clutched his chest and collapsed shortly after proceedings began; cause of death yet to be established

Virgin Times News A 50-year-old man standing trial over alleged conspiracy, kidnapping and multiple murder has collapsed and died inside the premises of the Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa, throwing the courtroom into confusion and shock. The deceased, identified as Bethlehem Nwanlia, reportedly collapsed shortly after proceedings began at Court 11 on Tuesday. Nwanlia was facing trial alongside two other defendants over allegations connected to the killing of three people in Kalaba community, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, in 2022. His death occurred shortly after Justice Amadise Michael Ekadi adjourned judgment in the case to October 27, 2026. According to witnesses quoted in the report, Nwanlia was in the court's holding area when he suddenly appeared to experience distress. He reportedly clutched his chest before collapsing. He Collapsed Shortly After Court Proceedings The incident reportedly happened within the court premises, where security personnel, lawyers and other individuals were present. Officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service, alongside police personnel and lawyers, reportedly attempted to assist Nwanlia after he collapsed. Their efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. A medical personnel was subsequently called to examine him. Following the examination, his body was reportedly taken to a hospital for further confirmation before being deposited at the mortuary. The development reportedly caused confusion among court officials, lawyers, security personnel and other people present at the premises. Bayelsa Judiciary Confirms Death The incident was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Judiciary, Enoch Okunobo, who spoke to newsmen on Tuesday evening. Okunobo confirmed that the man had collapsed and died while attending court proceedings. He also disclosed that Nwanlia's remains had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary. The judiciary spokesman, however, did not provide a definitive medical explanation for the death. Cause of Death Yet to Be Established As of the time of the report, authorities had not officially established the cause of Nwanlia's death. Reports indicated that the deceased had experienced some health complications while in custody. However, there was no confirmed medical statement establishing that any particular illness or condition caused his death. The fact that he reportedly clutched his chest before collapsing has also not been presented by authorities as a confirmed medical diagnosis. A proper medical examination would therefore be required to establish the circumstances surrounding his death. Police Yet to Confirm Incident When contacted, the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, said he was not aware of the incident. The police spokesman, however, reportedly promised to make inquiries and provide further information. As of the time the report was filed, no further police confirmation had been provided. Nwanlia Was Facing Serious Criminal Allegations Before his death, Nwanlia was standing trial alongside two other defendants over allegations involving conspiracy, kidnapping and multiple murder. The case relates to the alleged killing of three people in Kalaba community in Yenagoa Local Government Area in 2022. The allegations against the defendants had not been finally determined by the court before Nwanlia died. His death therefore does not constitute a judicial determination of guilt in the case. The remaining defendants are expected to continue facing the legal process unless the court directs otherwise. Judgment Had Been Adjourned to October 27 The development occurred at a particularly significant stage of the proceedings. Justice Amadise Michael Ekadi had reportedly adjourned judgment in the case to October 27, 2026, shortly before Nwanlia collapsed. It remains unclear how his death will affect the proceedings involving the other defendants. Any further decision concerning the case will be determined by the court in accordance with the applicable legal process. Courtroom Death Raises Questions The unusual circumstances surrounding Nwanlia's death are likely to attract further attention, particularly because it occurred inside a court complex while he was in custody. Authorities may need to establish his medical condition before the incident, the circumstances immediately preceding his collapse and the medical findings following his death. Such information would be important in providing clarity to his family, the court and other parties involved in the case. For now, the confirmed facts are that Nwanlia collapsed at the court premises, efforts were made to revive him, he was subsequently examined by medical personnel and his body was deposited at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary. The cause of death remains unconfirmed. Virgin Times News will continue to monitor the case and report any official findings concerning the circumstances surrounding Nwanlia's death.
