NAF Crash: NYSC-Bound Graduate, Only Son Among 25 Victims as Families Await Recovery

Virgin Times News The tragedy surrounding the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash at Igbokoda, Ondo State, has taken an even more painful dimension as details emerge about some of the victims, including a young graduate who was preparing for the National Youth Service Corps and was the only son in his family. The victim, identified as Ukeme David, had travelled to Benin for his NYSC clearance and was looking forward to returning to Lagos. According to a family member who spoke to Vanguard, David was originally expected to return home on Wednesday, October 7. However, a request from his family led him to change his plans and board the Nigerian Air Force aircraft on Monday, October 5. He was travelling to Lagos to help care for his sister while his mother was expected to return later in the week. He never made it home. The family said the loss was particularly devastating because David was the family's only son. «“He was a very intelligent student. He left Benin in the aircraft to come and look after his sister, when his mother was to return this weekend. He had intended to come on Wednesday, but Monday became his last day. He was an only son.”» His death has added another deeply personal story to a crash that claimed the lives of 25 people aboard the NAF aircraft. Partner mourns victim The pain of families waiting for their loved ones has also been reflected in the emotional account of a woman whose partner was among those who died. In a viral video, the grieving woman questioned why her partner had left without knowing that the journey would become his final trip. “He was going to Abuja,” she said, lamenting that she had not known he would never return. The emotional account has resonated with Nigerians as families continue to wait for the recovery and identification of the victims. Sonar technology deployed in recovery operation While families mourn, military and emergency teams have intensified efforts to locate and recover the submerged aircraft. A side-scan sonar survey has been deployed to map the crash location and establish the precise position of the aircraft beneath the difficult swamp terrain. The operation is being supported by Nigerian Navy divers and Nigerian Air Force drone operators, while the Navy's Hydrographic Department has deployed specialised sonar equipment because the muddy and highly turbid water has made underwater visibility extremely difficult. The sonar technology is expected to provide technical teams with a clearer picture of the underwater environment and assist in planning the next stage of the recovery operation. Swamp buggies and other mechanised equipment are also being prepared to assist teams working in the difficult mangrove terrain. Military chiefs assess crash site Senior military officers have also visited the crash location to assess the recovery operation. The delegation included the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, and the Air Officer Commanding, Logistics Command, Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Abdul Suleh. They were briefed at the Forward Operating Base in Igbokoda before travelling by boat to the crash site. The military leadership urged all stakeholders to remain calm and continue supporting the agencies involved in the recovery effort. Ondo State Government officials, emergency agencies, community leaders, the Nigerian Red Cross, NEMA, SEMA and other security and response agencies have also been involved in the operation. Main wreckage remains submerged The recovery operation has been complicated by the swampy and difficult-to-access location where the aircraft went down. As of Wednesday, divers had recovered some human remains and pieces of the aircraft, but the main body of the aircraft had not yet been brought to the surface. The crash involved an ATR-42 aircraft with tail number NAF 931, which was on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred. The Nigerian Air Force initially described the flight as a routine mission. The cause of the crash has not been established. While a family member of David expressed concern about weather conditions around the time of the accident, that remains an unconfirmed possibility and is not an established cause of the crash. Peter Obi visits NAF headquarters Former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi also visited the Nigerian Air Force headquarters in Abuja to sign the condolence register for the victims. Obi described the deaths as a painful loss to the country and commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their service. He also extended condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of those who died. Civil and military aviation authorities move closer The crash has also prompted renewed discussions about cooperation between Nigeria's civil and military aviation authorities. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo met with Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke and both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation between the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Air Force. The proposed areas of collaboration include aviation safety, airworthiness, certification, training and capacity building. A joint committee involving the NCAA and NAF is expected to help coordinate the proposed cooperation while respecting the statutory responsibilities of both institutions. Keyamo said the tragedy demonstrated that civil and military aviation ultimately have a shared responsibility for protecting Nigerian lives. The Chief of Air Staff similarly welcomed the initiative, saying greater cooperation and exchange of expertise could help move both military and civil aviation to a higher safety standard. Families now await answers For families such as David's, however, the immediate priority remains the recovery and identification of their loved ones. The young graduate who had just completed his NYSC clearance was expected to be preparing for the next chapter of his life. Instead, his family is now waiting for the recovery operation to bring closure to a journey that was never supposed to end this way. As sonar equipment, divers, drones and heavy machinery continue to be deployed around Igbokoda, attention remains focused on the difficult task of recovering the aircraft and its victims while investigations into what caused the crash continue. Virgin Times News will continue to monitor developments from Igbokoda and provide verified updates as the recovery operation progresses.
